Module Territorial Transformation
All around Aspern - automobile production and the city
The relationship between the city and the automobile is profound and complex. No other means of transport has changed the structure of the city and its relationship to the surrounding area so much in the 20th century and has fascinated and occupied generations of planners so much.
The car industry has also left its mark on Vienna. The Opel plant in Aspern was a guarantor of economic stability for a long time, but will soon close its doors for good. What to do with this giant, which would take up twice the Resselpark and extend from the beginning of the Naschmarkt to Kettenbrückengasse?
Using the Opel plant as an example, we will explore the relationship between the automotive industry and the city by searching for traces, examining and documenting the existing buildings and deriving transformation concepts for the subsequent use of the plant.
