Elective Seminar Wiener Täler
An analysis of the linear village structures in Vienna's north-west
The streams of the Vienna Woods have carved a series of valleys into the hilly landscape on their way into the Vienna Basin, which have been used as settlement areas for centuries. The historic roadside and neighbouring villages along these settlement axes form the starting point for the development of the north-west of Vienna.
In this seminar, the changes in the linear village structures of Grinzing, Sievering, Dornbach, Ottakring etc. and the surrounding cultural and urban landscape will be analysed together. The underlying processes in the development and transformation of the settlement bands and the associated development and open space networks will be investigated using historical and contemporary literature as well as image and map materials.
