Design Studio Berlin Giants
Large-scale architectural structures and their relationship to the city
Urban giants are fascinating and challenging. Some seem to be self-sufficient, others dominate their surroundings with their massive presence. The relationship between large structures - whether architecture or infrastructure - and the city is complex. As isolated heavyweights or as colossal vacancies, they have the potential to destabilise the urban space, but when reactivated they can also contribute to its positive transformation.
We want to ask questions about their rehabilitation:
Are the giants better than their reputation? How can they be repaired, remodelled, adapted? Which needs of which city dwellers should they serve? Do we have to adapt them to us or vice versa? And what do we learn from this about our idea of the city?
