The southern railway line as a multi-coded part of the urban landscape between Meidling and Mödling
The expansion of the southern railway line between Meidling and Mödling is a key project in the mobility transition. However, the new route is changing the city and the landscape: new tracks, operating facilities, and noise barriers are creating spatial barriers and divisions. In our design, the railway is not seen as a barrier, but as an opportunity: we are developing strategies for transforming the infrastructure into a multi-layered space – for example, in the form of parks, cycle paths, meeting places, or eco-corridors. The focus is on usable areas under, above, and along the tracks, the upgrading of station surroundings, and models for climate-friendly neighborhoods. The southern railway line is becoming a laboratory of ideas for how transport infrastructure can enhance the quality of urban life and create added value for cities, the landscape, and society.
