Future Conference Lake Access
19.–20.9.2024
Conference
In some state constitutions, securing access to lakes for the general public has already been enshrined more firmly. But what does the right to nature mean in practice? Especially where real estate prices are reaching record highs, so despite local protests, publicly owned lake properties are still being sold and the shores are not even visible behind hedges and walls. What legal and design options are there to improve accessibility - from lakeside paths and mobility concepts to opening up the lake outside of the bathing season? How can the near-natural design of lakeshore zones succeed? And what overarching socially and ecologically sustainable rules are needed, especially when dealing with sensitive shoreline habitats?
The program includes lectures and discussions with experts from landscape planning, architecture, water management, politics and administration as well as representatives of initiatives from various lake regions in Austria and Switzerland. On a walk through the “Experimental Field Sekirn”, we will explore the area of the Vienna Boys' Choir - the Institute of Building Theory at TU Wien has already realized several projects there and in the Wörthersee region in general, including in cooperation with the AA London. During an excursion with visits to selected shore zones, buildings and projects, potentials will be discussed on site.
Curation and organization: Raffaela Lackner, Judith Leitner and Nadine Thaler
The conference is a cooperation of the course “Seezugänge” of the Research Unit of Landscape Architecture and Landscape Planning of the TU Wien and the Architektur Haus Kärnten.
