The Department of Urban Design, TU Wien cordially invites you to the vernissage on 01.02.2024 from 6 pm in the foyer of the old WU.
Urban giants are fascinating and challenging. Many seem to be self-sufficient and yet their massive presence often dominates their surroundings. As isolated heavyweights or colossal vacancies, they have the potential to destabilise urban space, but when reactivated they can also contribute to its positive change and transformation.
In the winter semester 2023/24, we dedicated ourselves to the question of a possible rehabilitation of such large structures in an urban laboratory in the middle of the study area around the old WU: Are the giants better than their reputation? How can they be repaired, remodelled, adapted? Which needs of which city dwellers should they serve? Do we have to adapt them to us or vice versa? And what do we learn from this about our idea of the city?
Possible answers and proposals in the form of urban planning speculations and projects will be exhibited in the foyer of the old WU from February.
